Our staff of experienced professionals are dedicated to helping children heal from abuse in Greenbrier, Monroe, and Pocahontas Counties.

Katherine Thompson, MPA, MSW

Executive Director

Kat became the Executive Director of the CYAC in November 2015. After graduating from Emory University in 2010, she worked for the CYAC as an AmeriCorps VISTA in Marlinton, WV, where she managed the CYAC's satellite office and coordinated the Pocahontas County MDIT. She then moved to Chapel Hill, NC, where she completed graduate school at the University of North Carolina. Kat has worked for Wake County Child Protective Services and the Orange County Department of Social Services. She wholeheartedly believes in the multidisciplinary team approach to child maltreatment and is thrilled to be back at the CYAC.

Sydney Hopkins

Forensic Interviewer

Sydney joined the CYAC in September of 2016 as a recent college graduate. Her passion for working with children began while she was working at a child care facility, shortly after graduating from high school. While attending college, Sydney worked as a Family Support Specialist, providing direct services to children with open CPS cases. During her time as a Family Support Specialist, she gained a significant amount of knowledge and experience in working with abused and neglected children. Sydney is now a certified Forensic Interviewer and is very pleased to be working at the CYAC. As a Forensic Interviewer, Sydney talks to children who are suspected victims of abuse and neglect. She also coordinates the Greenbrier and Pocahontas County Multidisciplinary Investigative Teams.

Barbara Stone

Family Advocate

Barbara has worked with children and families in our area for over 20 years. She previously worked as a legal advocate for the Family Refuge Center in Monroe County. She joined the CYAC in July 2006 and provides support and advocacy services to child victims and their non-offending caregivers. Barbara also ensures that families have food to eat, warm clothes to wear, and gifts to open during the holiday season.

Susan Vlajk, ACSW, LCSW

Therapist

Susan is a founding member of the CYAC and has been with the organization since its beginning. She provides evidence-based, trauma-focused therapy to children and families and participates in the Greenbrier County Multidisciplinary Investigative Team. Susan has a wealth of knowledge and experience in helping children to recover from abuse. She trains other child welfare professionals at local, state, and national conferences.

Jose Hernandez, MPA

Forensic Interviewer

Jose joined the CYAC in October of 2016. Jose is a 2012 graduate of the University of Dubuque in Dubuque, Iowa, where he obtained two undergraduate degrees in Criminal Justice and Sociology. While at UD, Jose worked for Hillcrest Family Services as an Adolescent Residential Treatment Provider who specialized in serving children with substance abuse issues, mental health disorders, cognitive disabilities, past trauma, and verbal and physical aggression. Jose then went on to pursue his master’s degree at the University of Illinois and graduated in 2014 with a master’s degree in Public Administration. Upon graduating, Jose sought a career with the Missouri Department of Social Services, where he worked with troubled youth and helped counsel juveniles. Jose has also worked for Sangamon County Probation and Court Services and Anthony Correctional Center as a Correctional Counselor. In his spare time, Jose likes to spend time with family and friends, fish, travel, and participate in outdoor activities. As a certified Forensic Interviewer for the CYAC, Jose talks to children who are suspected victims of abuse and neglect. He also coordinates the Greenbrier and Monroe County Multidisciplinary Investigative Teams.

Chelsea Pisarri

Family Advocate

Chelsea attended West Virginia University and obtained a bachelor's degree in social work with a minor in communications. After graduating from West Virginia University, Chelsea worked for Child Protective Services and joined the CYAC in November of 2016. Chelsea has practiced social work for three years and has focused on abused and neglected children. Chelsea is a New Jersey native but has settled in West Virginia. As a Family Advocate for the CYAC, Chelsea provides support and advocacy services to victims and their non-offending caregivers. She also works to connect families to community resources.
