The Child and Youth Advocacy Center (CYAC) is seeking a hardworking, motivated individual to serve as a full-time (40 hours per week) Family Advocate. The CYAC is a private, nonprofit organization whose mission is to end child abuse in Greenbrier, Monroe, and Pocahontas Counties by coordinating a multidisciplinary team approach to investigation, prosecution, treatment, and prevention. The CYAC serves 200 to 300 children and families each year.

The Family Advocate’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing intake and support services for child abuse victims and their non-offending caregivers at the forensic interview;
  • Maintaining frequent contact with victims and families for at least a six-week period after the forensic interview to provide support and advocacy services;
  • Educating victims and their non-offending caregivers about child abuse and neglect and the systems that may become involved with their families (e.g., Child Protective Services, law enforcement, the courts, and medical and mental health providers);
  • Informing families about the Crime Victims Compensation Fund and assisting them with the application process;
  • Maintaining contact with victims and families throughout the investigatory and court processes to keep them updated on the status of their case. This includes informing clients of any court dates and arranging transportation as needed.
  • Conducting an assessment of client needs and identifying options to meet those needs;
  • Helping to connect victims and families to community resources;
  • Accompanying victims and their non-offending caregivers to court hearings and forensic medical examinations;
  • Participating in Multidisciplinary Investigative and Treatment Team meetings;
  • Documenting all services provided according to CYAC guidelines;
  • Maintaining client confidentiality;
  • Carrying out policies and procedures established by the Board of Directors;
  • Representing the CYAC to the public and assisting with awareness activities;
  • Other duties as assigned.

The Family Advocate is supervised by the Executive Director.


  • Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred;
  • Experience with children and families and knowledge of issues involved in child abuse and neglect cases;
  • Strong communication and computer skills necessary;
  • Must be versatile, self-motivated, and accountable;
  • Must be able to think critically, manage stressful situations, and work as part of a team.

Annual Salary: $25,000 plus benefits
